Deputy Premier and Transport Minister
Matteo Salvini wrote on social media Monday that US President
Donald Trump is the only leader capable of bringing peace while
describing Europe as collapsing under the leadership of European
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, France and Germany.
The Italian government also has the opportunity of placing Italy
back at the centre of the international scenario, the right-wing
League party leader wrote.
"I am convinced that Trump is the only leader who is finally
able to bring peace, contrary to a collapsing and marginal
Europe led by Ursula, Paris and Berlin.
"Our government has the historic occasion of bringing Italy back
to being central at the international level", said Salvini,
including in his post excerpts of an interview he gave to
newspaper La Verità.
"Macron wants a European army? Wrong and arrogant", also wrote
Salvini, describing von der Leyen's stance as "concerning".
"Instead of insisting on peace and diplomacy, she insists on
strengthening the European military", which the League leader
said was "dangerous and irresponsible".
