Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni was in
Paris on Monday to take part in an informal meeting on European
security and Ukraine, hosted at the Elysee palace by French
President Emmanuel Macron, together with the heads of
government of Germany, the UK, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands
and Denmark.
The President of the European Council Antonio Costa, European
Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary
General Mark Rutte are also joining the meeting, which is
scheduled to start at 4 pm, the Elysee Palace has said.
Macron called the gathering amid concerns that US President
Donald Trump could make a deal with Russian President Vladimir
Putin to end the war in Ukraine that undermines Kyiv and
European security.
"This meeting aims to start consultations between European
leaders on the situation in Ukraine and on the themes of
security in Europe", according to a note of the French
president's office.
The Elysee added that discussions could be "prolonged in other
formats, with the objective of gathering all partners interested
in peace and security in Europe".
No press conference or official statements have been planned
after the meeting.
