Campania Governor Vincenzo De Luca
on Monday came out in open conflict with Elly Schlein, the
leader of his centre-left Democratic Party (PD), amid tensions
over whether he should be able to run for a third term at the
helm of the southern region.
"The issue of a third term has been raised by people who have
seven terms under their belts," De Luca, who has been Campania
governor since 2015, told reporters at the presentation of an
exhibition on Pier Paolo Pasolini.
"The right honourable Schlein is in her 30s and she has already
had three - in the European Parliament, the (Emilia Romagna)
regional council and the Italian parliament".
The 74-year-old said that some would call Schlein a "cacique" -
a tribal chieftain of the Taíno people.
De Luca also blasted the party leader for moving to put the
Campania section of the party under external administration.
He said this "act of political delinquency" was linked to the
fact that 70% of the region's votes in this year's PD leadership
primaries went to her rival in the contest, Emilia Romagna
Governor Stefano Bonaccini.
