Pope Francis's coffin will be
transferred to St Peter's Basilica on Wednesday so the faithful
can pay their respects after he died on Monday at the age of 88,
the Vatican said on Tuesday.
It said the late pope's body will lie in state until his funeral
on Saturday.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Vatican released a photo of Francis in
an open coffin in the chapel of Santa Marta, the residence
inside the Vatican where he lived.
The late pontiff was dressed in a red robe with a white mitre on
his head and a rosary in his hand.
The Vatican said Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy
Roman Church, will preside over the rite of translation on
Wednesday, beginning at 9:00 AM with a moment of prayer.
The procession will pass through Santa Marta Square and the
Square of the Roman Protomartyrs, exit through the Arch of the
Bells into St. Peter's Square and enter the Basilica through the
central door.
At the Altar of the Confession, the Cardinal Camerlengo will
preside over the Liturgy of the Word, at the conclusion of which
the visits to the body will commence.
